About us

Adornment Stories cultivates space for Black intersectional mental wellness, centering the stories and healing of Black women, femmes, queer, trans, and non-binary communities using a “for us, by us, with us” framework.

In 2024, Adornment Stories took the critical step of incorporating, forming an initial 3-member Board of Directors. That same year, the organization launched a strategic planning process, with Stage 1 focused on reimagining the internal structure and building a solid foundation for future growth.

This stage was broken down into four key priorities:

  1. Assess the current operational and administrative structure

  2. Build sustainable systems, tools, and processes that improve access to data and information

  3. Invest in staff with professional development, training, and retention supports

  4. Source operational funding to provide long-term organizational stability

Through this process, the organization identified that staff and executive team members are operating at capacity, leading to burnout and a lack of perceived growth opportunities. To address these concerns, there is a clear need to expand both staff and Board leadership, especially to strengthen the fundraising capacity of the organization.

To support the assessment process, all Board Members will be asked to complete an Area of Expertise Matrix (Excel sheet) to identify the specific knowledge, skills, and lived experiences they bring to the Board. This exercise will help us better understand the collective strengths of the current Board and highlight any existing gaps in expertise that should be addressed through future recruitment.
